The University of Leeds Centre for History and Philosophy of Science invites Year 13 science students to enter a national competition. In conjunction with our free online exhibition, HPS in 20 Objects, which is accessible at the following URL: https://sway.office.com/cEekCFBF5CGFbYVj?ref=Link  we are asking students to tell us, in 800 words, “Which of our ‘20 objects’ is the most important, and why?”

The winner will receive £100, with two runner-up prizes of £50, and the best entries will be published on our centre website. All entrants will also receive a certificate, which can be used to support UCAS applications, as evidence of engagement beyond the A-level curriculum, with their chosen science subject.

The exhibition celebrates 20 intriguing artefacts from our in-house science museum, combining videos by centre faculty with study questions and links to further resources.  The resource is available to science teachers to support either in-class activities or independent projects,  or help with UCAS applications, by leading students towards an activity to make their application stand out.

Essays should be emailed as Word attachments by the deadline of 5pm on Monday 21 December to the Director of the Leeds Centre, Dr Ellen Clarke, e.clarke@leeds.ac.uk.  The winner and runners-up will be announced in the New Year, in time for inclusion on UCAS forms. Any enquiries should be directed to Dr Clarke.
