George Marshall Medical Museum (GMMM), Worcester, is delighted to be hosting a British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) Engagement Fellowship during 2018. Supported by the BSHS, this post will enable a current postgraduate student to carry out research in the history of medicine, drawing on the unique collections at the museum and public archives. The Fellowship, which is worth £2000, provides for about 160 hours of work, taken flexibly, and the successful applicant will collaborate with the museum’s Curator and volunteers to produce public-facing outputs, as well as inform future gallery developments, develop valuable skills in object-based research, partnership working and public engagement.
The Florence Nightingale Museum has secured Wellcome Trust Funding for an exhibition and events programme, in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Queen Mary University London, to research and investigate the 1918-19 Influenza Pandemic. GMMM will be hosting a touring exhibition from the project from Spring 2019 and the successful Fellow will work to add local content to the touring exhibition to bring the facts of one of the deadliest pandemics in human history to life for our local communities. Part of this role will be the creation of different engagement outputs which could include hands-on activities for families, interpretation panels, research booklets, learning packs or outreach resources. For these engagement activities, the Fellow will be able to draw on an additional small budget. There will also be an opportunity to speak at a seminar about their research in 2019 once the touring exhibition has been installed.
Primarily based with the Curator at GMMM, the successful recipient of the Fellowship will be supported in all activities, with access to the museum’s collections and Worcestershire’s archives held at the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service, The Hive, Worcester.
