Title: Antarctic Exploration Medicine
Speaker: Dr Henry Guly, Retired Consultant in Emergency Medicine
Overview: Dr Guly qualified in 1974 and has been a consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine since 1983. From 1997 until he retired in 2011, he was part of the the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit, based in Plymouth, which provides medical care to the British bases in Antarctica. From this he developed an interest in the history of the Antarctic and, more specifically, in the medical aspects of the expeditions of Scott, Shackleton and others and in 2015 he obtained a PhD entitled ‘Medical aspects of the expeditions of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration (1885-1922)
