De Montfort University’s Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR; www.dmu.ac.uk/ccsr) is offering the position of a Professor of Technology and Social Responsibility.

The CCSR is the UK’s leading research centre in responsible research and innovation, in particular in the area of computer and technology ethics. The CCSR is among the leading research centres in Europe and the world. Between 2008 and 2012, the centre led or was involved in successful research proposals worth approximately £6M. The CCSR is home of the long-running ETHICOMP conference series and edits the Elsevier Journal on Information, Communication and Ethics in society. The CCSR currently comprises seven academic members including two professors and a technical officer. It runs the Information Society Doctoral Programme (ISDP) which currently hosts approximately 30 research students.

The CCSR has served or continues to serve as coordinator of the EU FP7 research projects on “Ethical Issues of Emerging ICT Applications”, ETICA (www.etica-project.eu, 2009 to 2011), the EU FP7 project “Civil Society Organisations in Designing Research Governance“ (CONSIDER, www.consider-project.eu, 2012 to 2015). CCSR members serve co-investigator of the UK EPSRC funded project “Framework for Responsible Research and Innovation in ICT“ (www.responsible-innovation.org.uk, 2011 to 2014), work package leaders in the FP7 projects “Global Model and Observatory for International Responsible Research and Innovation Coordination” (Responsibility) and “Governance of Responsible Innovation” (GREAT, www.great-project.eu).

The internationally leading role of the centre is underlined by three new projects that will start in late 2013 / early 2014: The centre will lead the work package on “Researcher Awareness” of the FP7 Flagship Human Brain Project (http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/). It will coordinate the EU FP7 project “Responsible Research and Innovation in Business and Industry in the Domain of ICT for, Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing” (Responsible-Industry, 2014-2017). The centre will furthermore lead the work package on project evaluation of the FP7 Mutual Mobilisation and Learning Action on “Stakeholders Acting Together On the ethical impact assessment of Research and Innovation” (SATORI).

You will be experienced in initiating, conducting and disseminating high quality research and publications and will have evidence of generating significant income to support research. You will build on these strengths to develop new strategic research initiatives in areas of strategic importance, such as smart cities or big data.

You will provide strong leadership to existing and new projects. You will work closely with leading scholars from a range of disciplines and backgrounds. You will be able to shape the work undertaken and be expected to publish the results of the work in high quality outlets.

You will contribute to activities of the CCSR including supervision of research students of the Information Society Doctoral Programme (ISDP), mentoring of junior colleagues.

To qualify for the post you will be a leading international researcher in at least one of the areas of the CCSR, including computer ethics, technology ethics, science and technology studies. Your international leadership has been demonstrated by a track record of high quality publications, successful supervision of research students and the generation of research income.

You should be willing to participate in CCSR oriented research and teaching and support the CCSR in relevant administrative duties.
